Euthanasia:
|
Our definition of Euthanasia: We define euthanasia as the assisted suicide of the elderly who are terminally ill and in pain. We define the elderly as those over 70 years old. 1) We believe that only the elderly who are suffering as a result of an illness should be allowed to be euthanised 2) We are extremely opposed to the idea of people under the age of 70 being euthanised, as they are too young and still have a reason to live. 3) We also don't believe that people who are struggling with mental health should be given the option to be euthanised, as they are not in the right state of mind to make that choice. Also, mental health is something that you can fight through. We should not give up on these people in our community and allow them to be euthanised. 4) We believe that in order for somebody to be euthanised, that person needs to give direct consent in order for it to go ahead. Doctors should never be able to make this decision, as it causes too many problems. Doctors should not be labelled as murders for allowing somebody to be euthanised, and they would not be portrayed as this, as it would be their patient making the decision. Not them, and not that patients family. It has to be their decision and only their decision. 5) We believe that bodily autonomy is incredibly important. The elderly who are suffering from terminal illnesses should not be forced to live the rest of their life in pain Our Proposed Bill: Those over 70 should be allowed to be Euthanised, but only if they have an incurable, advanced or progressive illness that puts them through a lot of pain and is likely to cause death. The medical condition/illness needs to be clearly proven. The patient must have decision making capacity and needs to give direct consent to the doctor, nobody else can give consent on behalf of the patient. The patients doctors all need to agree that keeping the patient alive is only going to cause them more harm or that the level of physical pain they are enduring is high enough for Euthanasia to be a suitable option for them. Those with disabilities or mental health issues CANNOT apply for Euthanasia. |
